As many of you may know, the two terms identify two types of keys (push buttons) for membrane switches.\n<strong>A membrane switch is made in layers<\/strong>. The first is that of polyester graphics (originally a transparent material that is printed on the inner surface). Then there is usually a double-sided spacer adhesive, and then the layer of the flexible circuit.\nFinally, there is a final adhesive layer that is used to adhere the membrane switch to the target substrate. In close proximity of the button then come two signals, which <strong>must be &#8220;shorted&#8221; to close the contact<\/strong> and then activate the required function.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcs-it.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tastiere-a-membrana-con-PolyDome-o-tastiere-a-membrana-con-MetalDome-struttura-tasti.jpg\" alt=\"Membrane keyboards with PolyDome or membrane keyboards with MetalDome - key structure\" class=\"wp-image-19534\" \/><\/figure>\n\nTherefore, the connection can be closed in two ways:\n<ul>\n \t<li>In <strong>membrane switch with<\/strong> <strong>PolyDome<\/strong>, a silver-based conductive ink \u201cdot\u201d is printed inside the graphic layer using a silkscreen process, the same silver used for the flexible circuit tracks. By pressing a button squeezes the polyester previously deep-drawn by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermoforming\">heat-forming<\/a> process, <strong>the conductive stamp then short-circuits the two signals<\/strong>, closing the contact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li>In <strong>membrane switch with MetalDome<\/strong>, the contact closure is <strong>through a metal dome<\/strong>, which is a nickel-plated or gold-plated steel component that is placed between the graphics layer and the circuit layer. With the PolyDome switch, the <strong>key thermoforming is always dome-shaped<\/strong>, while with the MetalDome, the shape of the key can be customized.\nIn summary, the <strong>advantages of PolyDome membrane switches <\/strong>are:\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>smoother drive<\/strong> while maintaining a clear &#8220;click effect.&#8221;<\/li>\n \t<li>Making <strong>switches<\/strong> with a <strong>high key density<\/strong>;<\/li>\n \t<li>proportionately <strong>lower cost<\/strong> than the MetalDome type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Features and advantages of switches with MetalDome<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcs-it.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tastiere-a-membrana-con-MetalDome-produzione.jpg\" alt=\"Membrane keyboards with MetalDome - production\" class=\"wp-image-19533\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>When you need a clear &#8220;<strong>click effect<\/strong>&#8221; and a &#8220;<strong>perception of resistance<\/strong>&#8221; to pressing the keys, it is preferable to use a <strong>MetalDome<\/strong> <strong>switches.<\/strong>\n&#8220;We recommend this solution when the product is used outdoors &#8211; for example on construction equipment, agriculture, waste collection, etc. \u2013 perhaps wearing work gloves that actually reduce the perception of pressure\u00bb.<\/p>\nIn membrane switches with MetalDome, key hardness is defined by the weight of the metal dome, which is available in different sizes and types (280 gr, 350 gr, 450 gr, etc.).
