3D printed products, complete, with the best finish

Ready and operational is the new 3D printing plant, which will enable us to provide significant added value to customers: on the one hand, greater levels of production flexibility and product customization, and on the other hand, a significant enrichment of product design and functionality.

Today, the market demands products characterized by ever-increasing functionality and customization, products that must simultaneously be lighter, stronger and more flexible.

A demand that in our opinion can be answered effectively with 3D printing technology, as indeed we have already pointed out in the post outlining the advantages of this technology for electronics enclosures.

The new 3D plant will enable us to reap all the benefits of what is known as mixed additive manufacturing, that is, complementing 3D printing with all other business processes with the aim of producing finished and exclusive products for our customers.

New 3D printing plant - night vision

What distinguishes us from a typical 3D printing service? At MCS we have a clear vision of the finished product; we know that, for an electronic product, the expectations from a technical, functional and aesthetic point of view are very high.

Each project is approached from the concept design phase, whereby the characteristics and performance of a product are defined, which is followed by the manufacturing phase that integrates the new technologies of additive manufacturing .

Why so much attention to design? Because a well-studied, manufactured and finished object will surely be more successful: this concept was also explored in depth in a previous post

“Good design, when well done, becomes invisible.
It is only when it is done wrong that we notice it.”

(Jared Spool, US usability and design expert)

The benefits of investing in R&D

We have some years of experience with 3D printing technology behind us. At the time, we invested about a year in R&D to choose the most suitable material and technology for our products, and to arrive at a post-processing that would ensure that we would get finishes that lived up to our expectations.

Our finishing levels are appreciated by customers (often also from companies that offer 3D printing machines or services): only after seeing our finished products, they realize the real potential that is achievable with additive manufacturing.

However, not everyone can reach these levels, because they do not have our full mastery of all the processes of transformation and customization (design, liquid coating, CNC machining, silkscreen printing, digital printing, assemblies, etc.). That is why we do not need external contractors.

Very often client companies see the raw results of a 3D printed object, but fail to get a clear sense of a transformation into a finished product as we understand it.

For this reason, they discard 3D printing a priori as a product realization possibility, often assigning it to generic mechanical parts that do not need special aesthetic finishes; until they see our achievements.

Why we chose HP MultiJet Fusion 3D printing.

New 3D printing plant - unpacking

For our plant, we chose HP MultiJet Fusion technology (usable print volume 380x284x380 mm) combined with Nylon 12 (or PA12) material. There are, of course, other materials, but we chose this one because we believe it is the most suitable for our field of application.

The PA12 used in HP technology comes from very fine powders, with a thickness of only a few microns (in size and consistency it appears similar to talcum powder): this enables parts with very high density and therefore very low porosity to be printed, when compared, for example, with a laser sintering 3D printing technology. The print resolution is also very high and detailed.

As a result, the material and “molded” parts are very robust and can be used for both prototypes and functional end products.

Technical characteristics of PA12 in 3D printing:

  • Chemical resistance to oils, fats aliphatic and alkaline hydrocarbons;
  • possibility of having completely full parts, without supports;
  • possibility of having hollow or half-hollow parts with Lattice structure inside, keeping the mechanical and dimensional properties unchanged;
  • Ideal for outdoor and low-temperature installations;
  • excellent heat resistance;
  • Highly processable even with CNC rework;
  • High mechanical and abrasion resistance;
  • extremely low humidity absorption;
  • possibility of making articulated and jointed parts;
  • Dimensional characteristics with tolerances from ±0.3mm.
